Stunning, unusual and large late 19th century African tribal bronze ceremonial pot or container, c1890.
This is an impressive piece, a good size and very heavy. It would undoubtedly have belonged to a Chieftain or other important figure. The decoration is beautiful, it is covered in raised figures, snakes devouring men and other tribal motifs. The handles are in the form of snakes.
It has great colour/patina. Overall condition is good given its age. There are several holes and minor losses, for instance around the rim and handles but these are most probably original to the piece and part of the traditional lost wax casting process.
Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact us if you would like to view the piece or if you have any questions.
Size: 31cm tall x 30cm wide x 24cm deep, weight 10.2kg.
