An antique 19th Century country house/boarding school post box, c1850. The box is beautifully carved in oak, and has great gothic styling and a real presence.
The quality of the carving is very good, and the piece stands on lovely lion's paw feet. It has aged beautifully and has great colour/patina.
The brass plaque/letter box says 'Post Box For Hours of Departure see within'. The inside still has remnants of its original fabric and has a great distressed look. We expect at some time there would have been brass plaques inside the box indicating hours of collection, etc.
Overall condition is good. There is minor surface wear and a small piece of beading is missing from one of the decorative panels. There is also a small gap at one corner of the edging, and historic woodworm holes on the base (long dormant but treated anyway). One of the lion's paw feet has been repaired. These are all fairly minor issues and hardly visible, and very much as you would expect from something 150 years old.
This is a very impressive carved post box, one of the nicest we have seen. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact us with any questions or if you would like to view the item.
